Disability Awareness at School

Disabilities are challenges that may sometimes give people difficult times, whether it’s physical or intellectual. Sometimes, people see disabilities as a way that life is more challenging. Other occasions, people see disabilities as making life more interesting.   At school, we had a school assembly that addressed these issues.

Mr Young delivered an assembly to Years 7 and 8.  We learnt about numerous known famous people with disabilities, people like Helen Keller, who was an activist, writer, and speaker who was deaf-blind and the first deaf-blind graduate in the world. Stephen Hawking, who was a theoretical physicist who had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and was considered one of the most influential Scientists of his time. And Nick Vujicic, who is a motivational speaker, and was born without any arms and legs due to Tetra-amelia syndrome.

Mr Young tried to remind us to show patience with people with mental or physical disabilities and how this is important in society. The assembly was very informative and a reminder that we all need to be more inclusive and accepting of our differences.
